by Matt Omasta
Dr. Matt Omasta is a professor of theatre at Utah State University. While he was pursuing his Ph.D. at Arizona State University, he came to Highland High School to develop and see the first full production of his adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Gathering Blue, a sequel to the Newbery medalist’s widely read children’s novel The Giver. The script was originally presented in a staged reading while Omasta was a student at Emerson College in Boston.
Omasta’s adaptation went on to win three major distinctions in playwriting for young audiences. It was the winner of the New England Theatre Conference’s Youth Playwriting Award and was selected as a semi-finalist in the Bonderman National Youth Playwriting Symposium and a winner in the American Alliance for Theatre and Education’s Unpublished Play Reading Project.
