Gathering Grimm
Lottie, the younger sister of the Brothers Grimm, has hidden the manuscripts of her brothers’ folktale collection until Jakob and Wilhelm publicly acknowledges their origin. Rather than being told by old peasants, most of the early tales were told to the brothers by middle class schoolgirls. The play includes dramatizations of seven of the tales of Grimm. The frame story tells the true tale of the unrecognized young women who shared their stories with the world, as well as Lottie Grimm, who brought them all together.
The play had its world premiere in the Noorda Theatre in 2013 as part of the June 2013 Noorda Theatre Summer Camp. It was directed by the playwright. The production offered character roles for 16 young women and 6 young men, each of which was based on a historical individual who participated in the gathering of the stories collected and attributed to the Brothers Grimm. The script was subsequently produced by Carroll Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, North Carolina.
