Jacqueline, a Gypsy maiden, wishes to run away from her grandmother and settle down in a town. Stealing her grandmother’s magic book that commands a pair of fairies, Jacqueline creates a spell to turn a large oak into a Gypsy tree that will keep her rooted. When Jeremy, a young woodcutter from a village, tries to cut it down, Jacqueline uses her magic to prevent him. As she falls in love with Jeremy, Jacqueline convinces the fairies to make her appear like a village maiden, but her new appearance fails to enchant him, and Jacqueline makes a painful sacrifice that restores her to her true self and allows her to return to her family.
